Each week the Filter newsletter cuts through the noise to bring you smart, practical recommendations on how to live better – from what is worth buying to the tools, habits and ideas that actually last.

In October, we reviewed dozens of items, from sardines to slip-on shoes.

The most-purchased items among your fellow Filter readers ranged from practical – and whimsical – kitchen staples to an all-purpose layering piece for fall’s fickle weather.

Here are your five favorite products of the month, according to the anonymized data we have access to.

Anyday Anydeli Containers

Last week, these versatile, plastic-free containers recommended by Emily Farris, a food writer and contributor, were on sale. Many of you took advantage of the 20% discount, making these containers one of your October favorites.

Angry Mama microwave cleaner

This month, Megan Reynolds, a Filter editor, helped many of your microwaves look brand new with this quirky and effective gadget.

As she wrote in our guide to the best products for creating whimsy: “The grease and caked-on food steams off and can be easily wiped away when you’re done! When this old broad isn’t cleaning my microwave, she sits on the stove, waiting for her next round.”

Blueland Detergent Tablets

We’re always on the lookout for household essentials. These plastic-free dishwasher detergent tablets were a favorite, beloved by Jennifer Regan, our interim photo editor.

Viva Cloth Paper Towels

These paper towels were another unsexy but necessary staple you restocked this month. Reynolds said they’re even “strong enough to be reused – as long as the mess you’re cleaning isn’t too gross”.

Pretty Garden Cardigan

One article of clothing edged its way into your monthly favorites – this oversized cardigan. Paige Triola, a Filter contributor and self-proclaimed fashion minimalist, equated it to “wearing a hug”, which is enough of an endorsement for me.
